AT&T LTE network lighting up this Sunday in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio

AT&T CFO John Stephens confirmed at a Bank of America conference today that they would be flipping the switch  on LTE this Sunday. Opening markets will include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, with a total of 15 markets expected to have coverage by the end of the year. The Acer Iconia Tab will also be launching this Sunday , if you’re looking for a tablet with zippy wireless data speeds. The Jetstream tablet seems to be getting some solid speeds on the test network , and we’re expecting the HTC Holiday to be the first smartphone to take advantage of AT&T’s LTE rollout. Stephens mentioned that we could expect the first LTE phone, whatever it is, by the end of the year. AT&T is already selling some LTE internet sticks if all you’re interested in is mobile broadband.  As is, AT&T has been pushing HSPA+ as their “4G” technology, but this will be the first earnest step to compete with Verizon’s LTE network, which already has a significant head start . You can hit up AT&T’s mini-site for more information on their LTE devices, but there doesn’t seem to be any information on how they’ll be pricing LTE data for smartphones and tablets. Anyone taking bets on whether they’ll be charging an added premium? AT&T’s Samsung Infuse 4G gets a small firmware update and it’s not Gingerbread

AT&T has released a small firmware update for the Samsung Infuse 4G and it’s not Gingerbread. Rather, the 14.5MB heavy download is a maintenance update that fixes some of the known bugs, improves stability and performance, and so on. I bet it hurts that you have to wait for the Korean company and AT&T to finish with their testing and finally release the Gingerbread update — that’s presuming you own the Samsung Infuse 4G. The good (and old) news is that AT&T recently promised that all of its new Android phones, Infuse 4G included, will get the Gingerbread treatment at some point . We can only hope that won’t happen at a time when other devices start getting the Ice Cream Sandwich updates, cause that would be kinda ironical. Anyway, we advise you to keep your software up to date, so if you’re battery if fully charged – feel free to proceed.., not that you needed anyone’s permission, of course… [Via: AndroidCentral ] AT&T’s Samsung Infuse 4G gets a small firmware update and it’s not Gingerbread originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-09-15T11:06:19Z. Protext Mobility’s AmberWatch Safetext hits AT&T AppCenter; Enables child-safe texting

We’ve all heard about sexting and how children should be protected against that. Really it’s not easy to do that while not impeding on their privacy. Enter Protext Mobility, which AmberWatch Safetext made to do just that. What’s more, the application/service goes beyond sexting, helping parents protect their children from other potentially dangerous mobile activities like cyber-bullying and texting while driving. Parents are empowered with a robust set of features and online reporting tools designed to encourage responsible mobile device use while allowing parents to keep apprised of their children’s smartphone activities. These features include auto-analysis of text messages with real-time alerts to text message violations, as well as reporting of pictures, mobile Web browsing, driving alerts and many other safety features. The news here is that AmberWatch Safetext is now available from AT&T AppCenter from where interested parents can grab the app and subscribe to use it for $4.99 per month. It may sound a lot for an app, but since we’re talking about a child’s safety – it’s a bargain. As for the supported platforms, the application works on Android and BlackBerry smartphones… Protext Mobility’s AmberWatch Safetext hits AT&T AppCenter; Enables child-safe texting originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-09-15T09:52:00Z. Acer Iconia Tab A501 arriving at AT&T on Sept. 18 for $480

Six months ago, AT&T confirmed it would carry the Acer Iconia Tab A501 on its HSPA+ network. Well, AT&T over the weekend finally announced the tablet’s long-awaited launch. The LTE “4G” Android Honeycomb tablet is set to arrive on September 18th for the price of $480, but if you decide to sign your life away in a two-year data contract, the price drops to $330. The A501 isn’t really different from the original A500 that came out a couple of months ago ; it still features a 10.1-inch display, dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, and a full-size USB port. Android 3.0 is on board, but an over-the-air update is in the works to bump the tab up to Android 3.1. Data plans for AT&T start at $15 for 250MB with a $25 option giving you a lousy 2GB. Data can be purchased on a month-to-month basis or as a monthly plan. Honestly, I can’t understand why AT&T would offer an outdated Honeycomb tablet like this when most people aren’t really into the Acer Iconia. When you hear people talk, they mention popular Honeycomb tabs like Samsung Galaxy 10.1 or the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer . Besides, why would people want to sign a 2-year contract for the A501, when they could buy the A500 for $386 ? For mor information check out the press release below. AT&T and T-Mobile hearing set by judge for September 21

After being sued by the Department of Justice , AT&T and T-Mobile have a hearing set for September 21, where Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle expects the two companies to reach a settlement. The DoJ says that a merger between AT&T and T-Mobile would be anti-competitive, and would “remove a significant competitive force from the market.” Sprint, who is also suing to block the merger, would never be able to compete with the likes of AT&T and Verizon. The NYTimes reports: While the government’s criticism of the deal was harsh, officials have also suggested that there was room to negotiate. At an Aug. 31 news conference, Sharis A. Pozen, the acting assistant attorney general, said: “We apprised them of our serious concerns. And as any party can do, our door is open.” Despite all the odds against it, AT&T is expecting to reach some kind of solution to the lawsuits so that it can move forward with the merger. At any rate, things aren’t looking very promising for the carrier. The government, other carriers, customers and even its own employees don’t feel too comfortable with the move. And what about you, dear reader? Has your mind changed at all about the proposed acquisition since it was announced in March? Or do you still feel the same as you did then? AT&T to release the Huawei Impulse 4G for $29.99

AT&T has just announced a new smartphone called Huawei Impulse 4G, a low-end entry into Android and AT&T’s 4G market. The Impulse 4G will have a 3.8-inch screeen with 480800 screen resolution, and running Android 2.2. It also has a 5 MP camera on the back with auto-focus, flash, and 720p video recording. Customers will be able to get their hands on this phone for $29.99 with the usual 2-year contract extension on Sept. 18. Now, the Huawei Impulse doesn’t have any wow factor whatsoever; users should probably expect a dated single-core processor inside along with a max of 512MB of RAM, which is pretty standard for a low-level phone nowadays. This may be a good device for those customers who want an Android phone for cheap, but to be locked into a 2-year agreement for this? Isn’t worth it. Hopefully the off-contract pricing will be reasonable. For more information checkout the press release below. Working 9 to 5 during the summer season can make anyone reluctant to spend that hard-earned money. Now, smartphone customers can have a cutting edge smartphone at an exceptional value — the Impulse 4G™ from AT&T*. Key Facts Beginning Sept. 18, the Impulse 4G will be available for $29.99 with a two-year contract through AT&T stores, online at att.com and through select national retailers. The Impulse 4G from AT&T offers unbeatable value for those wanting to take advantage of the capabilities of an Android™-powered smartphone at a lower cost. The Impulse makes it possible to surf the web, watch videos, check emails and stay engaged with social media from a phone at an affordable price. Impulse 4G includes a 3.8” touchscreen and the ability to record HD video. Appearing in AT&T TV spots starting Sept. 18 and notably AT&T’s first smartphone from Huawei, the Impulse 4G doesn’t skimp on features despite its unbeatable value. Running the Android 2.2 platform and sporting HD video recording, a full touch screen and 5-megapixel camera, Impulse 4G meets mobile needs and can be paired with a Data Plus plan, with 200 MB of data for just $15 dollars. The Huawei Impulse 4G from AT&T is priced like a budget smartphone but brings a much larger display and higher resolution video recording than other Android phones at this price point.” “These days we’re all looking for ways to get the most for our money and the Impulse 4G from AT&T does exactly that,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “The Impulse 4G gives consumers another option to enjoy the benefits of a smartphone at an exceptional value.” “This is an important milestone for Huawei,” said Cui Jiangao, President of Huawei Device USA. “As we introduce our first smart phone for AT&T, we believe the Impulse 4G will allow consumers to experience the best of AT&T’s applications. We are committed to working with AT&T to create influential devices that will provide user-friendly mobile experiences.” *AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc. 4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul. Amazon Discounts LG Thrill 4G, HTC Inspire 4G to $30

The LG Thrill 4G has been available for just a little while and Amazon has already got a good deal on it waiting for you. They’re willing to part ways with the device for $30 as long as you sign a new two-year contract. Both new and existing users can get in on this for both individual accounts and new users can get the deal for family accounts. For an existing user on a family count AT&T’s asking for $70 but that’s still quite the steal for a dual-core 3D phone. Amazon has also posted a similar deal for the very solid HTC Inspire 4G. Check them out here and here and see if you can’t walk away happy.
