Android-powered Motorola Admiral caught posing for the camera

We’ve already heard of the Motorola Admiral, though at that stage we didn’t have a clue how it will look like. Now we do, and as far as we can tell, it’s yet another QWERTY keyboard equipped candybar from Motorola. That said, we’re not sure another such device is needed in Sprint’s portfolio, considering they already offer the Motorola XPRT and Titanium . Guess the idea is to get some of the folks switching from BlackBerry to Android on board. Anyway, you want to know the Admiral’s specs, right? It comes with a Qualcomm’s single-core 1.2GHz MSM8655 CPU, 3.1-inch VGA capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, CDMA-based Direct Connect capability, and a pretty solid 1,860mAh battery. Of course, the Admiral is also (just like Titanium and XPRT) a rugged device, built according to 810G military specifications. Release date is unknown at the moment and so is the price. As soon as we hear something new, we’ll get back to you, k? Google buys more than 1,000 patents from IBM to defend Android

If you thought Motorola’s 17,000 patents were enough to satisfy Google, think again. The Mountain View company just acquired a whopping 1,023 patents from IBM. And unlike July’s patent purchase, this batch seems to be almost exclusively about Android. As you might remember, Google acquired 1,030 patents from IBM back in July. As we told you then, most of those patents had nothing to do with Android. However, this time around Google went straight for the cookie jar. SEO by the Sea has put together a list of some the patents, which include: Coordination Of Cellular Telephones In A Residential Area To Obviate Need For Wired Residential Service Method And System For Efficient And Reliable Mac-Layer Multicast Wireless Transmissions System And Method Of Making Location Updating Management On A Mobile Station, Mobile Station And Mobile Network Telephone Information Service System Yep, that all sounds like mobile talk to me. More interestingly, Google also acquired a bunch of patents related to Java: Achieving Application-Specific Document Content By Transcoding Using Java Server Pages Mapping Enterprise Java Bean Attributes To Database Schema Determining Browser Type In An Open Java Environment Method And Apparatus For High-Concurrency Client Locking With Java In A Data Processing System Method Of Downloading Java Bean Files In A Network Scripting Language Blocks To Support Multiple Scripting Languages In A Single Web Page I wonder what those are for. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Google is getting ready for a massive patent war. How massive? Well, massive enough that the company feels the need to spend more than a dozen billion dollars on it. That’s no chump change, even for Google. When you add up all these recent patent acquisitions, Google now has more than 20,000 patents in its pockets. And I’m sure that number will keep growing for the foreseeable future. InterDigital’s 8,800 patent portfolio, for example, would be a great addition to Google’s patent war chest. After watching Google buy these many patents in such a short amount of time, one has to wonder how far the company is willing to go. Will they get to 40,000 patents? What about 60,000? This is Google, after all; once they set out to do something, they do it big.

Sprint’s LG Optimus S gets Gingerbread update, other Optimus models cry in the corner

It took them almost a year, but LG has finally started to update the LG Optimus One to Gingerbread. Sprint’s version of the Optimus One, the Optimus S is the latest in the Optimus family to receive the 2.3 update. Sprint announced today that Optimus S users should receive the update over the coming days. Included in the update are the following new features and improvements: Volume adjustment from handset when backlight is off and in a Bluetooth call Initiation of a 3-way call in certain markets Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Updated color scheme (includesdarker notification bar and black-based menus) New on-screen keyboard (supports multi-touch input and a  smart auto-correction function) Improved cut-paste functionality New integrated download application for ease in accessing downloaded files Updated camera application Power management and task killer applications If you want to get all those goodies inside your Optimus S, simply head to your phone’s Settings menu, tap on “About phone”, and then tap on ‘System Updates”. As for the rest of you out there using an Optimus T, Optimus V, Optimus U, Optimus M, Vortex, Thrive or Phoenix, I’m sure your update is coming soon. At least, I hope so. Even though the Optimus One is like the Galaxy S of the low-end Android world, LG is surely not in a rush to update these devices. With the company taking more than ten months to get these phones from 2.2 to 2.3. On top of it all, carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile are certainly not helping with their many customizations  and extra bloatware. As an LG Optimus T user, I feel your pain. Thankfully, it looks the wait is almost over. Hang in there.

Starting from September 28th, customers in Toronto and Ottawa will be among the first ones to get their hands on the super-fast and super-awesome Android smartphone. Orange UK is preparing to launch two smartphones – Samsung Wave 578 and Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray. UK Hot Deal: HTC Sensation available for 9.99 GBP on a 21.50 GBP/month plan from O2

Phones 4U has an awesome deal for the HTC Sensation. The phone retailer is offering the Android-powered smartphone for 9.99 GBP with a 21.50 GBP per month plan from O2. The mentioned plan is also pretty solid, offering 200 calling minutes, 3,000 text messages and 500MB of mobile data every month. Aside from the HTC Evo 3D, the Sensation is the best Android phone HTC has made thus far. It doesn’t have the Super AMOLED Plus screen like Samsung Galaxy S II, but other than that – it’s pretty on par with Sammy’s baby. And now that it’s offered with this deal, there’s no need to wait – hit this link , select O2 and you’ll see this plan listed on the first place. If you recall, the Sensation rocks a 4.3-inch qHD capacitive touchscreen, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 8-megapixel camera, GPS, Bluetooth, sensors and a microSD memory card slot [Via: EuroDroid ] UK Hot Deal: HTC Sensation available for 9.99 GBP on a 21.50 GBP/month plan from O2 originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-09-10T09:47:54Z. Motorola Droid R2-D2 getting the Gingerbread update, too?

Motorola has already started pushing Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates to the Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global users, but what about the DROID R2-D2? Will it too get the same treatment? Apparently members of the Motorola Feedback Network community have started receiving emails about a “confidential project for Droid R2-D2 owners.” We don’t have this officially confirmed, but it’s kinda safe to bet they are talking about the latest version of Android OS for smartphones. In that sense, I’m sure we’ll hear more from both Motorola and Verizon Wireless in the days to come. If you recall, the Droid R2-D2 is a special version of the Droid 2 made to pay homage to everyone’s favorite robot from the Star Wars movies. It is sold with a special dock, which is used for charging and syncing the phone with a computer. Aside from that, its guts remain unchanged and include a 1GHz processor, 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, 5-megapixel camera, side-sliding QWERTY keyboard and so on. Samsung SCH-W689 rocks two SIM card slots, bada OS and clamshell form-factor

Well what do we have here – a bada-powered smartphone that doesn’t come in an all-touchscreen form factor! Rather the Samsung SCH-W689 is a clamshell with two touchscreens, one measuring 3.2 inches and the other one – 3 inches; both of which support WQVGA resolution. But that’s not all – this little fella’ also rocks two SIM card slots and can work across both GSM and CDMA-based networks. Kinda neat when you think about it, too bad it’s a China only device at the moment. Rest of the specs include a 455MHz CPU (is that enough?), 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS, 3G EV-DO Rev. A and Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, 1500mAh battery and a microSD memory card slot. Bada 1.1 (not 2.0) is running the show. Now if Samsung can make Bada do this (handle multiple networks and screens) maybe there’s a future for their platform. This is not to say Android can’t do the same, it’s just that this could give the Korean company an edge when fighting for consumers’ hearts and minds in the emerging markets. In theory, they should be able to cut costs of their low-to-mid range phones by using bada instead of Android – bada doesn’t require gigahertz processors to run things smoothly. What do you think? Quad-Core tablets coming by end of 2011 – nVIDIA CEO

While the manufacturers of these upcoming tablets are not confirmed, we are putting out money on Motorola and Quad-Core tablets coming by end of 2011 – nVIDIA…

Samsung confirms upcoming Google phone will be named Nexus Prime

Samsung might have just confirmed the next “Google Phone” will be called Nexus Prime. The company has decided to upload the User Agent Profile file of the device with the “Nexus Prime” name clearly written on it. The page also officially confirms the GT-I9250 device as being the Nexus Prime, something we didn’t know for sure until now. As you might already know, the GT-I9250 is in the process of getting both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certifications. Which means that an official release by Google or Samsung might not be that far off. This fits perfectly with that rumor we heard a while back about Google rushing the release of the Nexus Prime in order to compete with the iPhone 5. However, we also heard last month that the GT-i9250 will be released between November 28 and December 4. Therefore, it’s completely up to you which rumor to believe. The User Agent Profile page also reveals a 480 x 800 WVGA resolution screen and an ARM11 processor. Having said that, this could very well be just a placeholder for the real specs. Which will most likely be something along the lines of OMAP4 and a 720p screen. It’s quite interesting that Google has once again chosen Samsung to build a Nexus device. Maybe those rumors about Andy Rubin being a huge Samsung fan are true after all. On one hand, I’m kind of happy that my next phone will be made by Samsung and not LG or Sony Ericsson. But on the other hand, I’d have liked to see Google give someone else a chance at bat. To wrap up, the next “Google Phone” will be made by Samsung and be called Nexus Prime. It’ll surely launch with Ice Cream Sandwich and it might be powered by an OMAP4 processor and a 720p screen. Stay tuned to Android and Me, I’m pretty sure Mr. BlurryCam is going to have its way with one of these in the near future.
