Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 now up for pre-order at Best Buy

Sad that the Samsung Galaxy Note and Tab 7.7 aren’t coming to the U.S. ? Well, at least you’ll have the Tab 8.9 coming your way, and sooner than you think. Best Buy has just put up their preorder page for the Android Honeycomb tablet listing a $469.99 pricetag for the 16 GB model. This is, of course, the Wi-Fi-only version, and we’ll have to wait to hear from carriers about their plans for an LTE device . The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 promises to be a solid Android tablet, touting a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, running Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and measuing only 8.6 mm thick. The display resolution clocks in 1280 x 800. We’ve been waiting on this thing since March , and even got some hands-on time with it at CTIA . No doubt folks that are looking for something more portable than an iPad (but can’t quite bring themselves to buy a PlayBook) will be eager to pick up the Galaxy Tab 8.9. The thing that really gets me about Samsung’s current Android strategy is just how many differently-sized devices they’re offering. As Sascha poignantly illustrates , they’ve got devices with 2.8, 3.2, 3.5, 3.7, 4, 4.3, 4.5, 5, 7, 7.7, 8.9, and 10.1-inch screens. Which is the best fit for you? If you’d like to preorder this particular Android tablet, you can find the Galaxy Tab 8.9 over here at Best Buy . Samsung to Use 1.5GHz Dual-Core Qualcomm CPU in T-Mobile Galaxy S II

According to the folks running the @GalaxySsupport Twitter handle, the dual-core processor replacing the Exynos chipset for T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S II is the 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8060. Understanding that you can’t always trust the person on the other end of a big company’s social media account to be in possession of all the facts, the revelation makes sense. Samsung has kept a lid on information regarding the processor to be found in the Galaxy S II variant, perhaps in favor of promoting their own Exynos platform for the time being, but compatibility with a Qualcomm modem tuned for T-Mobile’s 42Mbps HSPA+ network may have been the deciding factor. You will note that the APQ8060 was the processor to be rumored to be powering the Samsung Hercules the device that evolved into the 4.5-inch Galaxy S II. [ Twitter via TechCrunch ]

Samsung Artist Uses Galaxy Note to Draw Caricature of IFA Attendee [Video]

IFA 2011 came and went and before we move on to the next big event, I wanted to show you guys this video of a Samsung artist using his whopping 5.3-inch Galaxy Note to draw a caricature of one of the show’s attendees. I would think drawing would be a bit wonky on a small tablet like this and if you were thinking the same — you would be wrong. Using nothing but what seems to be a native drawing app on the Galaxy Note and it’s included touch input/stylus pen, he does a pretty good job at recreating his subject in digital form. Looks like HTC is up for a little competition whenever Samsung decides to bring the Galaxy Note stateside. Thanks, Peter!

Samsung Stratosphere for Verizon Comparable to Epic 4G

Hoping Verizon passed up on the Galaxy S II due to another beast from Samsung coming soon? Well, scratch the Samsung Stratosphere off your list as it most certainly won’t be the DROID you’re looking for, according to recent rumors. PocketNow has received press shots of the device and, sure enough, it looks like the Samsung EPIC 4G that Sprint carries. We’re not sure what specs may be inside once it launches but we do know this will be an LTE data chugger. We still expect Samsung to deliver the juice to Verizon (in the form of a “Prime” phone, hopefully) but that story has yet to be told. [ PocketNow ]

AT&T stays true to the international Galaxy S II

The Galaxy S II has been a bestseller around the world and AT&T for one isn’t going to mess with a good thing. Not only are they letting the Galaxy S II keep its maiden name, but they are also sticking with that 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display seen overseas. Consensus from those that have had hands on time with the phones so far is that giving up that extra bit of screen real estate may have been worth it as that 800 x 480 looks that much better on a 4.3-inch screen. They also may have wanted to avoid thoroughly confusing customers by placing a 4.5-inch Galaxy S II right next to their existing 4.5-inch Infuse 4G. The AT&T version has the distinction of being the thinnest of the U.S. bound Galaxy S II’s at 8.89mm and coupled with the fact that it will support AT&T’s HSPA+ it will be the slimmest “4G” smartphone in the U.S. when it launches “in the coming weeks.” The rest of the specs largely fall in line with its Sprint counterpart — the T-Mo version is an enigma wrapped in a riddle at the moment — with the one notable exception being a slightly smaller battery for AT&T (1650mAh), but its more diminutive frame excuses that difference and the lesser screen size likely means the battery life will remain comparable. The dual-core 1.2 GHz Exynos processor is a welcome alternative to the Tegra 2 that we are all familiar with at this point. The 8MP rear camera with 1080p video, 2MP front-facing camera, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and full complement of sensors are all what we have come to expect from a high-end Android phone today. The Galaxy S II will ship running Gingerbread (2.3.4 to be specific) with Samsung’s TouchWiz twist. Launching with the current version of the OS is about all we can hope for at this point — and is more than some are capable of — so I’ll take it. Unfortunately AT&T couldn’t quite manage to let the Galaxy S II slip into customers hands without giving in the bloat treatment with a number of unwanted   preloaded apps such as myAT&T, AT&T Code Scanner, AT&T Family Map, etc…. We’ve probably left the point where complaining about bloat makes any sense, but old habits die hard. So what do you think of AT&T’s take on the Galaxy S II? Are you glad to see someone opt for the smaller form factor of the international version or are you pining for a 4.5-inch screen with a dual-core processor on AT&T? Rogers Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Features 4.5-inch display, NFC

Rogers is rolling out their 4G LTE network, and one of the first devices that will test its speeds is the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE. The Galaxy S II LTE will feature several key upgrades over the its non-LTE brother, including an upgraded Xynos CPU pumping out 1.5GHz of dual core power, a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, and built-in NFC technology. The move to a larger screen seems to be consistent with at least one or two versions of the Galaxy S II headed for carriers in the US. Rogers will launch the Galaxy S II LTE in the fall. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 getting some LTE action, too?

4G LTE is all the rage these days, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 looks like it’s going to get a little of that speed treatment, too. In fact, we might even see it unveiled on Monday during Samsung’s Galaxy S 2 unveiling event–unless Hurricane Irene thwarts it and forces a rescheduling of the event. Otherwise, we’ll find out soon enough! Here’s what SammyHub has to say about this new LTE tablet: Unlike the original Galaxy Tab 8.9 that was announced at CTIA, this LTE variant has also got some upgraded specs like running Android 3.2 OS and 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Rest of the features include a 3MP camera, 8.9-inches WXGA (1280×800) display, 8.6mm thickness and 455g in weight. It sounds pretty solid, but Android really needs to kick it up in the tablet department. If you’re looking for a solid Android tablet, however, this looks like it could be a good, more portable alternative to the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Be sure to stay tuned next week as we bring you live coverage from the event, and hopefully more details on the new tablets and smartphones coming from Samsung. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi gets a small firmware update

Samsung has started rolling-out a small update for the Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The 3.22MB “heavy” download is said to address several of the problems Sammy’s TouchWiz UX have, making the device more stable than ever. Unfortunately, we don’t have the official change log and can only speculate about all of the changes included with this release. Still we advise you to “push the button,” making sure your beloved tablet runs the latest version of the firmware at all times. Except if your Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been rooted and now runs a custom ROM. We heard reports of some users having a problem updating their ClockworkMod-runnin’ Tabs. If you’re not in that group, you’re ready to proceed. However, if your tablet is rooted, we suggest waiting just a little longer. In any case, it’s good to have a backup of all your data prior to updating just in case (God forbids) something goes wrong. To see if the update is “ready for you,” go to “Settings,” then “About Tablet” and finally “Software Update.” [Via: AndroidPolice ] Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi gets a small firmware update originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-08-23T08:05:39Z. White Samsung Galaxy S II Confirmed for O2, Orange, Vodafone, and Three

Most major UK mobile retailers are now listing the upcoming white variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, following the plan laid when the handset was announced for a September release. O2 , Three , Vodafone , and Orange have all added the paler Galaxy S II to their “Coming Soon” lists, with T-Mobile UK being the only major player yet to confirm the handsets release. Chance are TMo UK will still get the Galaxy S II, most likely in time for its September 1st ship date. As has been stated before, the white variant lacks any differences from the version already released. If the timing works out or the color is a big selling point, it may be worth the wait. Otherwise you can skip the wait and grab the Galaxy S II now. [via AndroidCentral ]
