Android Market Featured-Image Guidelines

[This post is by Natascha Bock, a Product Marketing Manager on Android. — Tim Bray] With the latest Android Market update , our editorial team can use your 1024 x 500 “Featured Image” to promote your app on tablets, phones, and the Web. The image can be used on the home page on all versions of Android Market (Web, tablet and phone), on your product page in the Web and tablet versions, and on current and future top-level Android Market pages on phones. Creating a Featured Image that will do a great job of highlighting your app requires special design consideration. Not Really Optional While while many promotional assets are listed as “optional” for the publishing site, we strongly recommend treating them as required. To start with, a Featured Image is required if your app is to be featured anywhere within Android Market. They’re a good idea anyhow; they enhance your product page, making your game or app more attractive to end-users (and more likely to be considered for featuring by our editorial team). There’s nothing optional about the size, either; it has to be 1024 x 500 pixels. Do’s and Dont’s Your graphic is not an ad, it’s a teaser. It’s a place for bold, creative promotional images. Vivid background colors work best. Black and white are problems because those are the backgrounds used by the mobile-device and Web versions of Android Market. Limit Text to your app name and maybe a few additional descriptive words. Anything else will be unreadable on phones, anyhow. Do: Make the graphic fun and enticing. Don’t: Create a text-heavy advertising-style graphic. Do: Do: Use colors that stand out on black or white backgrounds. Don’t: Let the graphic fade into the background. Do: Promote your brand prominently. Don’t: Overload the graphic with details. Scaling Your image has to be designed to scale; it will need to look good both in a full-size Web browser and on a little handset. You can rely on the aspect ratio being constant, but not the size. Here’s a tip: Try resizing your image down to 1 inch in width. If it still looks good and conveys your brand message, you have a winner. On the Web: On a tablet: On a big phone: On a small phone: More Dont’s Device imagery is tempting, but becomes dated fast, and may be inappropriate if your user’s device looks entirely different. In-app screenshots are inappropriate because your product page already includes a place for these. Just using your app icon is a failure of imagination. You have more room; put it to good use! Consider the Context Given the size of the form factor, the phone is the most challenging channel for your image. Below we have both the “good” and “bad” sample images in that context: Don’t Forget A 1024 x 500 Featured Image is required for feature placement consideration. Don’t miss out on the opportunity!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Up for Pre-Order at Best Buy

If 10.1-inches of Galaxy goodness was just a bit too much, the Samsung’s smaller (but not smallest) Honeycomb slate is coming to offer an alternative. Best Buy has launched pre-orders for the 16GB and 32GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 on their website, though specific shipping dates are not mentioned. The 16GB model is priced at $469.99 , while the 32GB version is priced at $569.99 . Both versions are WiFi-only and feature a dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, and 8.9-inch display (as suggested by the name). Samsung recently unveiled a beefed-up LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 8.9, but from the Best Buy product listing this appears to be the older version of the slate revealed at last year’s Mobile World Congress. T-Mobile Readies The LG Mytouch Q – Video Tutorials All Set To Go [Update: They're A Pair]

Just got word from my friend @juanaguilar_45 on a rather puzzling email from he received this evening from YouTube. Seemsit was a notification email letting Mr. Aguilar know of a new video tutorial just uploaded to T-Mobile’s channel on their brand new Mytouch Q by LG. Weird thing is, we’ve never even heard of this LG manufactured Mytouch Q until now. Attempting to click the link takes you to a private video so no luck there. Now we can start with the speculating. We’ve known of the LG Optimus Q since back in 2010 and I really don’t think (hope) this could be that same device. You may also remember an “LG Q” that was leaked in a Sprint ID pack but that doesn’t really give us anything but a name. **UPDATE: The fellas over at AndroidGuys were able to secure a few images of the device and combined with a T-Mobile leaked roadmap , we now believe these devices (yup, 2) to be the LGMaxx and Maxx Q (QWERTY version). They’re twins! One will by called the Mytouch by LG and the other will be named the Mytouch Q by LG and both are slated for a November 2nd launch.

Sprint Making Major Changes – Shuts Down Premier Program, Cuts Back Return/Exchange Policy and More

As a Sprint customer, this is definitely NOT the news I was looking to hear today. Looks like Sprint is doing a bit of house cleaning and making a lot of changes in the form of a few cost cutting measures. Dead and gone is Sprint’s Premier program which recently saw a new tiered system into Silver and Gold members. Can’t say I’ll miss it. Now this one is going to hit me a little harder. Sprint will also be doing away with their once amazing 30 day return/exchange policy only to cut it in half. The new policy is a mere 2 week or 14 days. However you want to look at it — it sucks. But it’s not all doom and gloom for Sprint customers. Sprint will also be introducing a “New for You” program that allows customers to upgrade their device every 20 months. The downside? Well, it’s not really the same 2-year discount new customers get when purchasing a new device. After 20 months with Sprint, you’ll now receive $150 off the full price of a new device which could even be seen as less thanks to the increased upgrade fee, up from $18 to $36. All changes should go into effect by tomorrow, September 15th. Can’t say things aren’t looking too good for ‘ol Yeller. If T-Mobile still had a future, I’d consider making the jump back on over to them. But now, seems the only real option would be Verizon. Don’t think I could handle that steep monthly bill though. Bummer. [Via AndroidPolice ]

Deal: T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Free Through Thursday

Here’s yet another offer from T-Mobile for their MyTouch 4G. Like they’ve done at least twice in the past (I’ve lost count), they are giving users a chance to get it for free after signing a new two-year agreement. The T-Mobile myTouch 4G eventually lost its luster when it comes to sheer power, but the big secret is that this is still a pretty good phone. It’s got a snappy 1GHz processor, 768MB of RAM and a fork of HTC Sense (called Espresso) that really takes advantage of that SoC. Could be the perfect gift for someone who needs to come out of the dark ages of feature phones. Head over to T-Mobile’s site to take advantage if you want, but do it quickly – it’s supposed to revert to normal pricing tomorrow. [ T-Mobile , thanks Big Fella! ]

Live Your Android Life Tangle Free With Sinch

This is going to sounds a little crazy but — one of the reasons I don’t fuss around with earbuds is simply because of how gosh-dang easy those things tangle up in my pockets. Seriously. It drives me crazy! I’ve never been one for puzzles and trying to untangle those things is is enough to make me convert primarily to using the speaker on my phone. Thankfully, I came across Sinch which just might get me using my headphones again. As you can see, Sinch aims at keeping your life tangle free with this simple, “why-didn’t-I-think-of-that” accessory that attaches to your existing smartphone, MP3 player or whatever. Simply wind up your cord and Sinch snaps into place thanks to powerful magnets found on both ends. Its clever design is owed in part to frog who apparently had something to do with Imerj’s dual-screened Android powered smartphone we saw not too long ago. If you like what you see, you can grab your own Sinch in either black or white varieties from their site here for $15.99 . [Via Gizmodo ]

Winning Android Market Comment Of The Day Goes To… [Humor]

Today’s winning comment from the Android Market goes to… this guy (above). Apparently, Dan doesn’t understand that when you install a launcher replacement from the Market and change your homescreen that it — well, changes your homescreen. Rather than take the time to repopulate his new homescreen (Launcher Pro) with icons and widgets, he uninstalled the app after 30 seconds. In one last effort to kick developer Federico Carnales in the shins, he would later reinstall the app just so he could rate it the app 1 star. Ahhhhh… Android n00bs. Gotta love ‘em. [Via Reddit ]
