United States Government Files Anti-Trust Complaint to Block AT&T’s Purchase of AT&T

This is perhaps the biggest move in this case yet. The United States government has reportedly filed with the Justice Department to block AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile for $39 billion, citing anti-trust laws being violated as AT&T would be taking substantial competition off the market. “AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market,” the U.S. said in its filing. While many in government, including Governors and Senators, have already expressed their distaste with AT&T and Deutsche Telekom’s proposal, the entirety of the United States government backing everyone else’s concern is about as big as it gets. It’s a significant blow to AT&T and T-Mobile, though it doesn’t necessarily mean their hopes are completely dashed. Developing… [ Bloomberg ]

AirPush Detector Will Help You Figure Out Which Apps Are Obtrusively Advertising to You

A while back, I wrote about AirPush and how horrible it was for the future of free applications. It’s a model that has huge potential as far as generating revenue goes, but is such a sick way of advertising. In short, even if you exit an AirPush-enabled application, they may still show you ads in your notification bar. Imagine how many people see “You have a new email” and accidentally click on it, only to be taken to the market. I think it’s wrong to be able to do this, but unfortunately, there’s no law that says developers can’t. I won’t go into my tirade – that was what the original post was for. But I am here to tell you that, should you ever accidentally download an application with AirPush and can’t figure out who the culprit is, there’s an app out there to help you. It’s called AirPush Detector and does exactly what it says. You can’t disable the functionality in your application of choice, but it’ll make finding out who’s responsible a lot easier. It’s free and worth a download if you have one of these applications but can’t seem to find out who exactly is taking over your notification bar. Find it in the market here . Sony to Bring the Cyber-shot Brand to an Android Device?

Sony has a wide range of successful brands, products, and technologies that we have begun to see crawl into their Android lineup. Sony Ericsson has thrown everything from an Android-laden Walkman handset to the PlayStation Suite of the Xperia Play at their growing range of smartphones, and new whispers suggest another brand might be revitalized with Android in the near future. Images have surfaced of a touchscreen device sporting familiar Android buttons and none other than the Cyber-shot name above them. There is little to go off of but a couple of blurry images, so there is no telling if this will end up being a camera with an Android interface or a full-blown smartphone with an emphasis on photography. We wouldn’t doubt the latter as SE’s recent strategy seems to focus on creating devices that serve niche sections of the market. Create enough of these devices and you have the market covered. Take it as rumor for now, but we’re interested to see what Sony might pull of with one of those high-powered image sensors. [via MobileSyrup ]

Android Market bound to have more apps than the App Store in the next few months

Just yesterday we reported on Android’s stunning growth, well that was yesterday. Today, we have yet another indication that Android is headed towards inevitable world domination. Research firms Distimo and research2guidance , have both released reports predicting that the Android Market will overtake Apple’s App Store in the number of apps, in the next few months. Distimo is reporting that the Android Market will blow past the App Store before the end of July. While research2guidance forecasts that the Market will have 425,000 apps by August, easily beating the App Store. This is mainly due to the Market’s break-necking speed at which is getting more apps. In April alone, developers published 28,000 new apps to the Market, whereas Apple only had 11,000 new apps. This of course, will be a significant milestone for Android. Being the platform with the most apps is no easy task, specially when the platform launched roughly a year later than Apple’s. But here we are, about to witness something many considered impossible just a year ago. Nonetheless, there’s still an aspect where Android lags behind iOS,  and that is apps’ quality and design. Hopefully, a rising number of apps in the Android Market means we’ll see the quality rise as well. In-Stat: There will be more than 375 million mobile payment users by 2015

Mobile payments are widely seen as a promising market and In-Stat predicts that by 2015, more than 375 million users will pay stuff using their mobile phones. That’s an increase from this year’s forecasted 116 million mobile payments users. According to market analyst Amy Cravens, there is a consumer demand for mobile payments. However due to pain points included with current systems, they [consumers] are reluctant to use such services. Amy goes on suggesting that if mobile operators are able to push beyond the infrastructural challenges and introduce mobile payments to the mass market, the transactional value of the market can grow nearly tenfold over the next several years. Some other research findings that indicate the market’s preparedness include: Significant smartphone penetration. Consumer comfort level with purchasing goods with their phone through existing channels. A desire among mobile operators to develop opportunities to generate revenue from mobile based commerce. Infrastructural developments supporting contactless payments, including NFC-enabled mobile phones and POS terminals. As usual additional details are available from In-Stat’s report titled “Mobile Payments Worldwide: Is the Market Ready?” In-Stat: There will be more than 375 million mobile payment users by 2015 was originally published on IntoMobile . Apple and Steve Jobs Are Still Afraid of Android, And They Should Be [Opinion]

It seems we can’t get through an Apple press conference these days without Steve Jobs or whatever Apple representative is presenting taking a jab at their competitors – namely Android. I remember a time where Apple believed they were in their own bubble.
