Kantar Worldpanel ComTec: More than 3.6 million people in the UK now own a tablet

Research company Kantar Worldpanel ComTec says that there are more than 3.6 million people in the UK with a tablet, representing 7.6% of the population — up from 2.8% in November 2010. Needless to say, Apple’s iPad accounts for almost three-quarters of tablet sales with the Samsung Galaxy Tab holding the distant second position with 5.9% market share. According to the report, the iPad will likely continue to dominate the market, with just more than half of potential tablet owners saying they would buy an iPad over the next year. The Samsung Galaxy range is the next choice, with just 6% of consumers planning to buy the tablet. And that’s not all, there’s a room for other manufacturers as well – “28% of consumers that intend to purchase a tablet in the next year are still undecided about which brand to buy.” Finally, it’s important to add that the majority of tablet sales so far were Wi-Fi-only devices (as opposed to 3G + Wi-Fi)… [Via: FT ] Kantar Worldpanel ComTec: More than 3.6 million people in the UK now own a tablet originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-09-14T07:03:30Z. Samsung Galaxy Note, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S available for pre-ordering in the UK

Two newly announced Android smartphones, Samsung Galaxy Note and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, are already available for pre-ordering in the UK through Clove. The online retailer asks 349.99 GBP (about $563) for Sony Ericsson’s baby, listing September 26th as the availability date. The device, which BTW is an upgrade of the original Xperia arc, can be pre-ordered in either midnight blue or pure white . As for the Galaxy Note, the situation is completely different there. Clove has no clue when Sammy’s huge superphone will be available nor how much it will cost. They show a “speculative price” of 600 GBP without sharing any dates whatsoever. If that doesn’t bother you, and you also happen to have 600 pounds to spare, you can secure your Note unit from here . As for the rest of us — actually some of you who don’t mind carrying around such a big device — you can always wait a month or two for the carrier subsidized options. Sneak peek: Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

As many of you probably know, today is the “epic” day when the Samsung Galaxy S II will be announced for US residents. This is no small deal; we’ve been waiting for this device since its release  last April. We’ve been patient enough. Our chance to get our hands all over the Samsung Galaxy S II has–almost–finally arrived. Only a few hours before the long-awaited announcement , Samsung has outed information on Sprint’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II. This device will be called the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, and the specs seem to be similar to the international version. The only major difference is that this bad boy will have a stunning 4.52-inch display. This could be good or bad, depending on your preferences. That larger Super AMOLED Plus display should be great for media and games, though. Aside from the screen, everything should be pretty much the same, including the 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. Another mentioned is an “Advanced Android Experience,” which probably includes that interesting-looking app drawer Samsung’s site displays. (Posted below). Stay tuned for more details on this and the other Samsung Galaxy S II devices set to be announced today. Anyone grabbing this bad boy? Do you guys like the larger screens? Is it too big?

Samsung Galaxy S 2 event live in New York City tonight

The Samsung Galaxy S II is finally arriving in the U.S. and Samsung is kicking things off with an event tonight in New York City. We’ll get to see the AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile models–since Verizon has opted out of the GS2 for something else, something potentially better–and just see what, if any, perks each model has. The event was initially scheduled for Monday, August 29, but due to uncertainties with hurricane Irene, we’re getting treated tonight. If you’ve been dying to see the hype about the Galaxy S II, and you’d like to see the official U.S. unveiling as it happens, be sure to tune in tonight just before 6 p.m. EDT where we’ll give you live updates and images from the event. Samsung Galaxy W hitting Three UK in September

Wow that was quick. Only days after the official announcement (along with other models), Three UK said it will start offering the Samsung Galaxy W at some point in September . And while we don’t have the exact date nor how much the carrier will ask for the device, we think it’s safe to bet Sammy’s smartphone will be offered for free on contracts starting at about 25-30 GBP. As a reminder, the Galaxy W is a high-end smartphone with a single-core 1.4GHz processor, 3.7-inch S-LCD WVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera on the back, VGA front-facing camera for video calls, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, 4GB of internal memory, memory card slot, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show. In a nutshell, it’s like a slightly improved version of the original Galaxy S with a smaller screen — Galaxy S comes with a 4-inch display… And you can check out the Samsung Galaxy W preview from a short video below. X10 AirPad rocks 7-inch WVGA screen, $199 price tag

If you’re looking for a cheap and “not that powerful” tablet, maybe the X10 AirPad offers all the things you need. It sports a 7-inch WVGA (800480 pixels) touchscreen — by comparison the Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia Tab A100 have a 1024600 pixels screens — and the $199 price tag. In addition, there’s also a 1.2GHz Rockchip 2918 processor on board, along with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, 2-megapixel camera, 4,000mAh battery, Wi-Fi, HDMI out, 3.5mm headset jack, full-size USB port, memory card slot, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show. In a nutshell, it’s nothing spectacular but then again good enough for 2 hundred bucks. If that’s something you like, hit this link and take it from there. Just don’t complain you have to scroll through all the content on that WVGA screen. Let’s face it – tablets need higher resolution or at least me thinks so. Samsung Galaxy S II Event Rescheduled as Hurricane Irene Presses on Towards NYC

We have been waiting what feels like decades for the official US unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S II, and thanks to a pesky weather event beyond any human control we will be waiting at least one day longer. The media event originally scheduled to take place in the New York City this Monday, August 29th, has been postponed until Tuesday as a mandatory evacuation has been ordered for over 250,000 people living in the city and plans have been made to suspend public transportation over the weekend. But come August 30th things should be back in order, and we’ll be there live bringing you announcements as they unfold.

Galaxy Y, Y-Pro, M-Pro and W–Samsung devices from the Unpacked commercial?

In an attempt to better categorize its smartphones, Samsung created its very own naming strategy. What good is a naming strategy without a good variety of devices, though? This is why Samsung is also introducing 4 new devices, ranging from entry-level to mid-end devices. Before we move on to the phones, let’s explain how the new naming strategy works. It uses letters (Y/M/W/R/S) and a second indicator when it applies (Pro/Plus/LTE). These are the definitions of each letter and indicator according to Samsung: “S” (Super Smart) – Devices at the very pinnacle of Samsung’s mobile portfolio. This class will only be used on flagship devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S–the award-winning smartphone that has already sold 10 million units throughout the world. “R” (Royal / Refined) – Premium category models. A combination of power, performance and productivity for the individual who wants to be defined by the technology they carry. “W” (Wonder) – High quality, strategic models. Perfect for those seeking a balance between style and performance. “M” (Magical) –High-performance models at an economic price-point. “Y” (Young) – Entry models or strategic models for emerging markets or a younger audience more sensitive to price. “Pro” – The device includes a QWERTY keyboard for speedier email typing and increased productivity for professionals. “Plus” – The device is an upgrade from an existing model. “LTE” – The device is designed to utilize LTE (Long-Term Evolution) connectivity standards, a 4G standard to provide increased mobile network capacity and speed. With all the terms are straightened out, it’s easier to know what to expect from a device just by its name. And as you can see, the devices introduced today are entry-level to high-tier. We love diversity and choice; we welcome all types of smartphones. Galaxy Y This entry-level smartphone (Y) will be affordable, but not as powerful. Sporting an 823 MHz processor and Android 2.3, this will not be such a bad device. Even low-end devices are coming out with Gingerbread these days, which is a great sign. Also, that processor would have been among the best just a year ago, so it will definitely take care of most simple tasks you throw at it. The Galaxy Y will also come with a 3-inch display and a 2 MP camera and will feature Swype. Not too bad for an affordable smartphone, right? Galaxy Y Pro Details about this device are scarce, but you can expect it to be the same as the Galaxy Y with a different form-factor. This device comes with a full QWERTY physical keyboard and resembles the Blackberry form-factor. Would be good for Blackberry users trying to jump on the Android bandwagon. This smartphone is designed for “professionals” who need to message, edit documents and type for longer periods of time. Galaxy M Pro This “Magical” device brings better performance to the affordable price-range. Also sporting a physical keyboard, this device does feature better processing power and specs for those professionals that need a boost. With a 1 GHz processor, a 2.66-inch display, a 5 MP rear-facing camera, a .3 MP front-facing camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, this device should not have too many hiccups. Galaxy W This high-tier “Wonder” device will come with a 1.4 GHz processor (still single-core). Not bad at all. Featuring Android 2.3 Gingerbread, this smartphone should take care of all your needs. What makes this different is that it  has a 3.7-inch display, which is not common for devices with better specs. Conclusion Seeing new devices show up is always great, and we welcome them to the Android family. There is one more thing I have been wondering about, though. IFA is just around the corner, and these smartphones have just shown up. Do you guys think the Samsung Unpacked commercial has something to so with all these phones? After all, it does show a bunch of people with a “shiny thing” on their hands. This could relate to the messaging that there’s a Samsung device available for every type of person out there. Do you guys think this is the “big thing” (or things) Samsung was teasing us about? Or might it be another device? If you haven’t seen the commercial, it’s posted below. Anyone liking these new devices?

For those of you who have been patiently waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 to launch, we are now a few steps closer to its release. It’s puzzling as to why Samsung continues to torture would-be Galaxy Tab 8.9 buyers here in the states but hopefully this is an indication that we’ll see the tab soon enough. [Via Engadget ]

Rumor: Sprint’s Galaxy S II to be Named Samsung Epic Touch 4G, Launching September

This is one rumor I’m sure many have been waiting to hear about. BGR has allegedly received word from a source of theirs that Sprint will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S II in September. According to them, its name will be the Samsung Epic Touch 4G, a nod to the fact that this one doesn’t have a hardware QWERTY keyboard. They also claim WiMax radios will find some room inside the device’s chassis. That’s all we know for now, but the timing does suggest earlier rumors of Verizon being the first carrier to get it are true. And Verizon’s said to be getting it later this month, if it means anything. Unfortunately, we don’t even have official acknowledgement from any carrier or Samsung regarding these devices’ existence. We know it’s coming, but we still feel very far away.
