Google and Samsung delay Ice Cream Sandwich, Nexus Prime announcement

Just a few short days after Google and Samsung unleashed a teaser video announcing that “Something BIG is coming,” Google and Samsung have announced that they have decided to postpone the announcement of both the Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich. In a joint statement by the two companies, both Google and Samsung feel this is not the right time to announce a new product. We’ve now received official confirmation from Samsung’s PR Director Kim Titus. Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course Kim Titus Samsung And ComputerWorld got an update directly from Google. It looks like this is related to the passing of Steve Jobs. We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing. Spokesperson Google Before you get out the torches and pitchforks, this doesn’t mean that the actual release date of the Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich have been delayed, and we still expect both the next Nexus and the next version of Android to launch by the end of November as former Google CEO Eric Schmidt promised exactly a month ago. Though we won’t be seeing the next big thing in Android at CTIA on October 11, it seems our wait won’t be much longer. We will keep you updated once we have more information about a rescheduled event.

Samsung and Microsoft Reach Licensing Agreement Over Smartphones and Tablets

Samsung announced Wednesday that they’ve reached a licensing agreement with Microsoft over the sale of their many tablets and smartphones.  Samsung has agreed to pay Microsoft royalties for all devices running the Android operating system.  How much exactly will remain a mystery for the time being.  Is it me or does anyone else find it’s odd that Microsoft makes more money from license agreements and patent infringement deals off of Android than they do actually selling their own Windows Phone devices? REDMOND, Wash — Sept. 28, 2011 — Microsoft announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., to cross-license the patent portfolios of both companies, providing broad coverage for each company’s products. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung’s mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone. “Microsoft and Samsung see the opportunity for dramatic growth in Windows Phone and we’re investing to make that a reality,” said Andy Lees, president, Windows Phone Division, Microsoft. “Microsoft believes in a model where all our partners can grow and profit based on our platform.” “Through the cross-licensing of our respective patent portfolios, Samsung and Microsoft can continue to bring the latest innovations to the mobile industry,” said Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, executive vice president of global product strategy at Samsung’s mobile communication division. “We are pleased to build upon our long history of working together to open a new chapter of collaboration beginning with our Windows Phone “Mango” launch this fall.” Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential. And if you’ll recall, Samsung wasn’t the only company to enter the cross-hairs of Microsoft’s scope.  They also have an agreement underway with Acer and Viewsonic for other Android violations.  I would really love to have been a fly on the wall in the corporate offices of Microsoft when they rolled out Plan B, should Windows Phone not do well, and that is to sue everyone and rake in as much as possible from the innovation of others. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Up for Pre-Order at Best Buy

If 10.1-inches of Galaxy goodness was just a bit too much, the Samsung’s smaller (but not smallest) Honeycomb slate is coming to offer an alternative. Best Buy has launched pre-orders for the 16GB and 32GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 on their website, though specific shipping dates are not mentioned. The 16GB model is priced at $469.99 , while the 32GB version is priced at $569.99 . Both versions are WiFi-only and feature a dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, and 8.9-inch display (as suggested by the name). Samsung recently unveiled a beefed-up LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 8.9, but from the Best Buy product listing this appears to be the older version of the slate revealed at last year’s Mobile World Congress. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE gets a little update love from Verizon

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE for Verizon is getting an update, but before you go celebrating like it’s Christmas in the summer, it’s just a minor one. Still, the bug fixes and other tweaks should make the end user experience much more pleasant. The update will be available OTA, or over-the-air, and will fix 4G LTE connectivity issues. That’s good news, because why have a nice, capable LTE tablet like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that has a fickle connection? AndroidCommunity  says: I know many users (myself included) were hoping this would be an update to Android 3.2 Honeycomb or even the recently released  Touch Wiz UX  that the Wi-Fi version received but it is neither. This update is a minor software update and nothing more. While I wish we were receiving an update to the stable 3.2 Honeycomb, I’m still happy that they are providing some fixes and hopefully users have a more stable connection following the update. While I do agree that it’s fair for users to hope for more, a little patience goes a long way. But at any rate, keep your eyes peeled for the update as it’s expected to arrive soon. If you’re the impatient type, you can furiously check for the update manually until you develop carpal tunnel syndrome. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is, as its name suggests, a 10-inch Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet with a 1GHz dual-core processor from NVIDIA. It has front and rear-facing cameras for stills and video recording and calling. It’s available in 16GB or 32GB models, and starts at $499. T-Mobile compatible Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 clears FCC

Good news if you like T-Mobile and want to grab yourself the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. A version of Sammy’s tablet that sings along the magenta-colored carrier’s 3G bands (1700MHz) has cleared the FCC and is now officially ready to be sold on the U.S. soil. That, my friend, doesn’t mean we’ll actually see T-Mobile and Samsung announcing the device any time soon – it just says to us “such an option” is possible. And while we keep our fingers crossed, you can go through the FCC filing to check all the documents Korean company submitted to get the clearance from the Commission. Honestly, it’s not that interesting, but I know there are some of you who like to read manuals and check for radiation levels (or not)… [Via: Engadget ] T-Mobile compatible Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 clears FCC originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-09-15T10:00:44Z. More Samsung Prime Rumors – This Time Spotted In The Wild?

Another day, another dose of Samsung Prime rumors. Alright, out of all the rumors we’ve heard so far — this one deserves to be taken with the smallest grain of salt. Apparently, TheDroidGuy was traveling through Las Vegas this week for Verizon’s developer conference when he ran into a Samsung employee. He noticed the guy was holding a nondescript Android device and asked if he could take a look at it. After a bit of persuading, the Samsung employee paused, looked over both his shoulders and finally agreed. The Sammy employee took them into his private office, where he instructed TheDroidGuy (Kyle) to remove his bags, cell phones and possibly all articles of clothing before he could proceed. Once Kyle complied, he whipped out the phone and let Kyle manhandle the device. Identified as the Samsung Nexus Prime the device was described as looking very similar to the Nexus S only bigger and with a home button smack on the front. The device also had an 8MP camera on the back, 2MP front facing camera and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Wait- what? Yeah, apparently Ice Cream Sandwich is still getting the bugs ironed out and isn’t ready to come out of the freezer, hence the reason for the homescreen button on this early, presumably developer handset. Probably the most interesting bit of information he was able to squeeze out of the Samsung employee was the fact that there would be both a GSM and CDMA version of the device, meaning you can look forward to a Nexus Prime no matter which carrier you’re on. Alright guys, for the final verdict I’m turning this over to you, the jury. Bogus? Real? Was this really the Samsung Prime? Keep in mind Kyle made no mention of his face melting off or hair turning white and last time I checked, that was one of the features of the Nexus Prime… [Via TheDroidGuy ]

LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II heading to Rogers Wireless in Canada

Canada’s Rogers Wireless will be adding the LTE-enabled version of the Samsung Galaxy S II to its portfolio. Starting from September 28th, customers in Toronto and Ottawa will be among the first ones to get their hands on the super-fast and super-awesome Android smartphone. Yep this includes our very own Simon Sage, who will undoubtedly try to get a review unit and let you know what he thinks about it. Alternatively, the carrier will also offer the LTE Rocket mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 754S), Rogers LTE Rocket stick (which is now available in Ottawa), with other LTE products — including some HTC smartphone and a tablet — to follow shortly. In related news, we hope Verizon will also have its version of the LTE-based smartphone and that some European countries will get it too, despite Samsung saying that won’t happen until the second quarter of 2012 . We’ll definitely we watching for “anything LTE” and let you know as soon as we hear something new… [Via: AndroidCentral ] LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II heading to Rogers Wireless in Canada originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2011-09-14T10:43:55Z. DoCoMo and Samsung to partner in an attempt to compete with Qualcomm on basebands

Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo and South Korean handset maker and component supplier Samsung, as well as Fujitsu, NEC, and Panasonic, are partnering up in an attempt to take on Qualcomm , who according to Japanese publication Nikkei has 80% of the baseband market. What’s a baseband you might ask? If you know what a modem is, then you already know what a baseband does. It’s a chip that makes sure your mobile phone connects to a wireless network and delivers you your email, Twitter, Facebook, and whatever else you happen to do on the internet. The project will kick off immediately and will have 30 billion yen ($390 million) pumped into it, with over half coming from NTT DoCoMo. When all is said and done, the products this joint venture will create will end up being used in a majority of Japanese mobile phones and likely in Samsung products as well. This move is significant because Samsung currently manufacturers their own processors for smartphones and tablets, but they still rely on an external partner for providing cellular connectivity. If they can bring that in-house, then they could start selling complete platforms, just like Qualcomm does, and both NVIDIA and Intel hope to some day do as well. This is also good news for DoCoMo, because they’re an incredibly advanced operator who wants to be the first to adopt the next big wireless standard. In this case, LTE-Advanced. Instead of relying on Qualcomm’s time table for delivering innovation, which looks at the global market as a whole, this joint venture can run circles around everyone, making chips that are several generations ahead of everything else on the market. Should Qualcomm be scared? Not really, they’ll likely maintain their lead in the baseband space because they’re just so damn good at what they do. These companies teaming up are simply looking to introduce some competition to Qualcomm’s near total monopoly in order to bargain some lower prices. More Samsung Prime Rumors – Device To Be Announced After iPhone 5 Launch?

It’s time for yet another , Samsung Nexus Prime rumor (like you could get enough). This time, I received an email today from one of our readers in regards to the Verizon version of the device code named “Droid Prime.” Our tipster was able to squeeze out some info from his close friend who works deep within Verizon’s HQ. The Verizon insider confirmed that the “Prime” will in fact be heading to Verizon and on either November 17th or 24th. He also mentioned he hasn’t heard anything on it being labeled as one of Verizon’s “Droid”devices (Droid Prime). The device might not even be announced until sometime after the iPhone 5′s launch, pushing the Prime release out of October and into that original rumored November date. Once again, this is all “he said, she said” and while this is nowhere near “official,” I’ve always been one for juicy gossip. Thanks Droidfan11 !
